Airtel Money Uganda’s new Easy Float service has taken the fintech scene by storm with agents borrowing $ 267 000 (UGX 1 billion) on the first day.
In partnership with FINCA Uganda and Kuunda, the innovation empowers mobile money agents with instant float loans to keep businesses running smoothly and boost financial inclusion nationwide.
The new service, which allows mobile money agents to instantly access float loans and ensure uninterrupted business operations, opened the floodgates for massive demand and trust in the new platform.
The official launch event in Kampala drew industry leaders and partners who hailed the development as a major leap toward financial inclusion and liquidity empowerment for thousands of Airtel Money agents across the East African country.
Speaking at the launch hailed as a major boost for the digital economy, Japhet Aritho, Managing Director of Airtel Money Uganda, revealed that the initiative was born out of the need to address one of the biggest challenges facing mobile money agents - limited float.
“Agents often struggle to predict how much float they’ll need in a day and sometimes running out mid-operation. Over the past year, Airtel Money, Kuunda, and FINCA have worked together to solve this challenge,” he said.
Aritho added that Airtel Easy Float was designed with affordability and accessibility in mind.
“The pricing of this product is not based on the amount borrowed but on a share of the commission agents earn. As of yesterday, the total loan amount taken reached $267 000 (UGX 1 billion),” he stated.
The Airtel Money Uganda Managing Director further reflected on Airtel’s broader digital transformation journey.
“In the early 2000s, people used taxis to send money. Airtel Money changed that with digital transfers. Now we are solving for our agents, ensuring they never run out of float and can continue to serve customers without interruption,” added Aritho.
James Onyutta, Managing Director of FINCA Uganda, described the partnership as a natural fit for the three parties.
“Airtel provides the reach, Kuunda enables access, and FINCA brings financial inclusion. Together, we are making that vision real,” he said.
Diana Owusu-Kyereko, Group Commercial Officer at Kuunda, emphasised the wider impact of the successful collaboration to Uganda.
“This moment is about empowering the people who move money in Uganda. With Easy Float, agents can serve more customers without breaks and the economy wins as cash keeps moving,” she stated.
