Bayobab, the digital infrastructure arm of MTN Group, has appointed Mohamed Bassit (Mohamed Abdelbassit) as its new Chief Communication Platforms Officer (CCPO.

Bassit, who will report directly to Mazen Mroué, CEO of MTN Digital Infrastructure, brings more than 25 years of experience in ICT and wholesale telecoms. His career spans leadership roles in mobility services, connectivity, and digital platforms across the Middle East, Central Asia and Africa.

Bayobab, MTN Group’s independent digital infrastructure company responsible for fibre networks, data centres, subsea cables and communication platforms that connect African businesses and consumers to the rest of the world, said Bassit assumed his new role on September 1.

Mroué stressed that the experienced executive’s appointment would enhance Bayobab’s central role in MTN’s “Ambition 2025” strategy to build Africa’s largest and most reliable digital backbone.

“We are excited to welcome Mohamed to the Bayobab leadership team. His deep industry expertise and strong network will be instrumental in driving our strategic ambitions forward. As we expand our communication platforms offering, his leadership will be key to unlocking new opportunities for growth across Africa and beyond,” he added

Bassit previously served as Chief Wholesale Officer and Regional CEO for the Middle East and West Africa at Liquid Intelligent Technologies. There, he spearheaded the launch of a new fibre operation, established an international data centre in Nigeria, and oversaw major connectivity rollouts across the continent. Earlier in his career, he held pivotal roles at BICS, GBI and MACH (now Syniverse), where he was credited with expanding international wholesale services and cross-border connectivity.

Commenting on his appointment, Bassit said he was honoured to join Bayobab at such a critical time in Africa’s digital transformation. “Bayobab’s mission to strengthen the continent’s infrastructure and create borderless communication aligns perfectly with my passion for enabling connectivity that drives economic and social progress.”

With an MBA and a Finance degree, Bassit also holds a Cisco CCNA certification, underscoring his technical and business acumen. “His appointment reflects Bayobab’s push to accelerate the growth of its communication platforms business while deepening its role in Africa’s digital economy,” stated Mroué.
