MTN South Sudan has partnered with the Universal Service and Access Fund (USAF) to bring mobile network coverage to Abuyong for the first time, bringing vital mobile connectivity to a region that has long remained digitally disconnected.
For years, the community of Abuyong faced the challenges of living without access to mobile services. The lack of connectivity meant that communication, online learning, and digital economic participation were nearly impossible.
Mapula Bodibe, CEO of MTN South Sudan, said the new infrastructure marks a major step forward in bridging the digital divide for rural South Sudan.
“This is not just about building towers. It’s about creating access to opportunities. Through our partnership with USAF, we are reaching places that have historically been left behind,” She said.
The new site will allow families to stay in touch, students to access educational resources, and entrepreneurs to explore new markets and services online.
Under its recently renewed 15-year operating license, MTN South Sudan has committed to expanding its network coverage to reach 90% of the country’s population. The Abuyong site is one of several upcoming installations aimed at making that vision a reality.
“This launch demonstrates the power of strategic public-private collaboration. Connectivity is a fundamental enabler of progress, and MTN is proud to play a leading role in South Sudan’s digital journey,” added Bodibe.
South Sudan’s biggest telco emphasised that its network expansion efforts are not just about telecommunication but about inclusion, empowerment, and economic growth. The MTN CEO went to reinforce that investing in critical infrastructure, MTN South Sudan is working to ensure that no one is left behind as the country moves towards a more digitally inclusive future.
“As the network goes live in Abuyong, the community is now better positioned to participate in national development, access essential services, and unlock new opportunities through mobile technology,” she said.
