Safaricom, East Africa’s largest telecommunications and mobile money company, serving more than 45 million customers across Kenya and the region, has unveiled four new millionaires, deepening celebrations for its 25th anniversary.

The latest winners from the ongoing Shangwe @25 consumer promotion, Josephine Waswa, Bernice Mumo, Abdi Dahir, and Josephat Mwilaria join 20-year-old Yvonne Wanjiku Kang’ara, the campaign’s first millionaire, announced earlier this month.

Speaking at the Bungoma award ceremony, 36-year-old sugarcane farmer Josephine Waswa said the moment was transformative.

“I can’t believe the 15c (KSh 19) airtime I bought on M-PESA has turned me into a millionaire. I plan to expand my farming and build a home. For my community, I will make desks for pupils at Kasosi Primary School, where children currently share desks in groups of six,” she said.

Bernice Mumo, a 26-year-old cosmetology graduate still job-hunting, described the win as miraculous.

“I always see people winning, but never imagined I would be one of them. I will use the community funds to equip a laboratory at Mwalano Dispensary so residents no longer travel long distances for tests,” he said.

In Garissa, 25-year-old turn boy Abdi Dahir said the news of his financial windfall brought unimaginable relief.

“My whole family depends on me. This win will help me support them and build my mother a house. I will also donate water tanks and desks to Sangailu Primary School,” he stated

Jubilant businessman Josephat Mwilaria, 51, initially doubted the message due to previous fraud attempts but confirmed the win at a Safaricom shop.

“M-PESA is safe and convenient. I’ll reinvest in my business and support Pillars of Hope Children’s Home.”

The Shangwe @25 promotion is generating more than 50 000 weekly winners, with over 5 million customers expected to benefit from $1,934,230 (KSh 250 million) in prizes.
