HOAX: This website promising MTN Uganda customers cash prizes is fake

The telecommunications company has warned customers about the fake promotion.

A website advertising cash prizes for customers of MTN Uganda is a HOAX.

The link to the website, that is being shared on various social media platforms, claims that the telecommunications company is giving away cash prizes through its “Customer Reward Program” to customers of more than three months standing.

After clicking on the link, users are asked to enter their names to check if they are among 2,400 customers selected to receive a reward. A confirmation message then pops up, showing that the user is listed to receive a cash prize of UGX 40,000.

Before they can receive the gift, users are asked to send the link with 12 groups on WhatsApp, with a promise that the reward will be sent to their mobile money account in less than two minutes.

However, the link appears to be clickbait; there are no further steps after the link is opened, no money is received and no information is provided on how to get the cash prize once the message is shared with others.

On November 10, 2020, MTN Uganda warned customers that the message making rounds on WhatsApp is a fake promotion, adding that all MTN promotions are announced on its official social media pages and website.

A WHOIS search shows the website with the clickbait is registered to Richard Komakech, and is not affiliated to MTN Uganda and was registered on June 3, 2020. Additionally, the adsug.com link redirects site visitors to an investment website called “CASHOME”.
