In Kenya, where nearly half of distributed water goes unaccounted for, a groundbreaking partnership is deploying technology to ensure every drop matters.

Liquid Intelligent Technologies, a subsidiary of Cassava Technologies, has teamed up with global smart water innovator DropByDrop to transform water management through real-time data and Internet of Things (IoT) integration. The partnership aims to combat the country’s soaring non-revenue water losses, currently estimated at 47%, by equipping utilities with digital tools to detect leaks, automate usage tracking, and improve billing accuracy.

“Water scarcity is a growing challenge across the continent Through our partnership with DropByDrop, we are bringing advanced technology to digitise Kenya’s water infrastructure and build smart water ecosystems that empower service providers and communities,” said Neeraj Pradhan, Acting CEO of Liquid Kenya.

At the core of the initiative is Liquid’s existing IoT infrastructure, which will seamlessly integrate with DropByDrop’s cloud-based water management platform. Features include SCADA-enabled remote monitoring, geo-asset mapping, multilingual interfaces, and smart valve control, making it easier to identify leaks, shut off lines when necessary, and optimise distribution based on live data.

Sergey Khorolsky, International Projects Partner at DropByDrop highlighted that the collaboration marks a big step toward scaling its mission to make water accessible and equitably managed. “Our goal is to make every drop count. Liquid’s digital backbone allows us to bring sustainable and intelligent water solutions to more regions faster,” he said.

Beyond improving operational efficiency, the platform supports broader ESG goals and contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Data gathered from the system can inform urban development strategies, support environmental reporting, and unlock new infrastructure financing opportunities.

Pradhan stressed that the partnership underscores the critical role of digital infrastructure in solving real-world problems. “By blending cloud technology, data analytics, and IoT, Liquid and DropByDrop are offering a smarter path forward in tackling Kenya’s water crisis, making it not just a story of innovation, but one of impact,” he said.
